Yes! Monsoons in India are very erratic with light drizzle and no guarantee of a dry head; so you must make it a point to wash your hair every 2-3 days to keep it clean.

A thought echoed by Dr. Akshay Batra, a well-known Trichologist and Deputy MD of Dr Batras’ Positive Health Clinic who adds that, “During rainy seasons, tap water contains more chlorine and hence one must make use of mild shampoos and conditioners to maintain the texture of their hair”.

Remember to wash your hair gently as hair drenched in rain, often ends up in a tangled mess. After washing do not towel your hair vigorously as this will weaken your hair roots and cause split ends, instead opt for the gentle pat and dry routine whenever you have to dry your hair.

Its aroma refreshes you, without your daily cuppa you wouldn’t dare begin your day. Coffee for coffee lovers is the answer to stress, fatigue, joy, a good book and a rainy day. But coffee is more than that; large amount of research proves that coffee has health benefits for those suffering from Diabetes, hypertension, Parkinson’s and Colon cancer. Those who drink 2 cups of coffee everyday have 25% less chance of suffering from colon cancer, 80% less likely to suffer from liver cirrhosis and 50% less likely to have gall stone other than reducing the risk for Parkinson’s by 80%. Coffee is also known to manage asthma in absence of medication, reduce headaches, boost mood and prevent cavities. Doesn’t that make you glad, okay time for another cup of coffee!

Remember: Not more than 2-3 cups of coffee everyday and mind the sugar you add otherwise you will do more harm than good!

You must have heard it hundreds of times, mostly from your mother or grandmother but you paid no attention. But starting your day with lemon water makes sense. Lemon water is good for detoxification of the body and drinking it first thing helps to eliminate the bodily wastes effectively paving the way for a glowing skin. Lemon water is rich in Vitamin C that helps in strengthening the immune system and also potassium which is good for heart. Lemon water though is acidic, acts as an alkaline in the body thus helps in curing digestive problems like heart burn, constipation and nausea.

Lemon water is simple and easy to make, take a glass of lukewarm water and squeeze half lemon and you are done.

High blood pressure is the affect of blood pressing against the arterial walls of the heart. The basics of the diet plan help manage blood pressure numbers. These foods are:

Saffron: India is known as the land of spices and herbs, one such herb saffron, is immensely effective when it comes to managing hypertension. Saffron or Kesar, as it is popularly known contains a water soluble carotenoid called as crocetin, which is known to lower high blood pressure in individuals suffering from hypertensions.

Coconut Water: The simple and tender coconut is great when it comes to controlling and reducing high blood pressure. Containing high quantities of potassium in excess of 600 mg per 11 oz of serving, coconut water also contains high levels of Vitamin C which make it very effective in controlling or preventing hypertension. However, one must not consume too much coconut water as it also contains sodium along with potassium.

You don’t always need prescription medications to lower your blood pressure. By making few diet changes, you can lower your blood pressure and reduce your risk of heart disease.

Garlic: Garlic is known as the most effective agent against hypertension or high blood pressure, as it contains a compound known as Adenosine which dilates the muscles of the blood vessels, which helps to lower high blood pressure. To get the maximum benefit from garlic, it is best to consume it in its raw form. Consuming a clove of raw garlic a day goes a long way in controlling hypertension.

Spinach: Spinach is one of the richest natural sources of calcium, magnesium and potassium. Plus spinach consists of Folate, a B-vitamin found in tomatoes and citrus fruits; Folate is known to help in the reduction of Homocysteine, an amino acid found in blood which damages blood cells. Folate is also known to help blood vessels relax, which helps to improve blood pressure.

With every beat our heart pumps blood through the arteries to various parts of the body. The force applied by blood against the walls of the blood vessels is known as blood pressure, when this force becomes high, it gives rise to hypertension or high blood pressure.

Most people don’t know about their condition until they visit a doctor and have their blood pressure checked. A regular blood pressure reading is measured in two numbers, systolic – the number or reading on top, and diastolic – the number or reading below. A 120/80 is considered as a normal blood pressure, anything in the region of 140/90 calls for a visit to the doctor as it may point towards hypertension.

Digestion requires lot of energy thus requires good flow of blood towards it. When we take a warm shower, it raises our body temperature and in order to cool the body there is more blood flow near the skin to allow the heat to be released. Thus the blood required by the stomach is not being available to it and the process of digestion suffers. So it is advisable to wait 30 minutes before bathing.

Research has shown that regular tea drinkers have a lesser chance of suffering from life threatening medical conditions such as a heart attack and stroke. Regular consumption of Green Tea or the Black Tea has in the past been proven to prevent the buildup cholesterol in the arteries, thereby reducing the risk of coronary diseases.

Whereas, regular consumption of green tea is advised to patients who have suffered from cardiac or stroke related problems, as generally whenever one suffers from a heart attack or a stroke, the oxygen to the particular organ is cut off causing massive cell damage to the organ, rendering it almost non- functional. A component known as epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) found primarily in green tea helps prevent this cell death. Moreover EGCG is also known to speed up the healing process of the heart cells, by promoting tissue growth.

However, ingesting three or more cups of coffee or continually drinking caffeinated beverages throughout the day can cause adverse effects.

Caffeine leads to increased heart rate, increased blood pressure, and occasional irregular heartbeat which overloads the adrenal gland and increases increasing vulnerability to disease pathogens and other health hazards.

It is also found to create indigestion, skin irritations and arthritic flare-ups.

Caffeine causes a release of glycogen by the liver, which can generate wild swings in blood sugar, causing attacks of hypoglycemia i.e. low blood sugar.

Caffeine puts burden on the kidneys so may lead to kidney complications.
