You must be wondering what things at your desk can be the breeding grounds for bacteria. But will be surprised to know that the regular things which you use in the office like keyboards, mouse, telephone or mobile can be the hidden places for bacteria to thrive. These bacteria and viruses which live on the unclean surfaces can multiply and can cause various illnesses, like- cold and flu. Your house keeping staff in office may clean all others things but will seldom clean your desk properly. It is you who have to be cautious about your desk hygiene and avoid the spread of bacteria as much as you can.

Coconut water is considered the most natural beverage–after water of course. For centuries, people around the world have revered coconut water for its health benefits, convenience and taste. Here are some benefits:

Hydrates the body: Coconut water’s electrolytic balance is the same as our blood as it is a isotonic beverage. This makes it an excellent choice when it comes to replenishing our bodies of the water and the electrolytes that are lost in sweating and urinating.

What more, coconut water contains very less natural sugars – 5 mg per 100 ml, and no cholesterol along with very few calories making it the ideal choice for an ‘after-workout’ drink.

Hypertension: Individuals suffering from Hypertension or high BP are found to be lacking potassium in their diets, according to the journal of clinical hypertension. Coconut water contains a high level of potassium – 294 mg per 100 ml and drinking coconut water regularly can help regulate the blood pressure levels in these individuals.

Helps clear Intestinal Worms: Mixing a teaspoon of Olive oil with Coconut water works as a potent remedy for getting rid of Intestinal worms, as coconut water contains an anti-bacterial Monolaurin which helps in fighting the intestinal worm. To get optimum benefit from this mixture, it should be had for three days.

Traveling on a regular basis can be fun, but it gets tiring. It can also really knock you down. One of the biggest problems for people who travel often is that they get sick often as well. If you or someone in your office is traveling a lot, try following these tips and help them stay healthy and strong:

Drink ample water –Water is needed for intra-cellular activities in our body and it keeps our skin hydrated. Less consumption of water will lead to dehydration of our body; furthermore we need water for the formation of urine, which is the body’s way of flushing out toxins. Carry a slightly heavy water bottle with you, as its weight will serve as a constant reminder to you for drinking water while travelling!

Wear Comfortable shoes- Travelling involves a lot of use of the feet, and if your feet aren’t comfortable, travelling can become quite stressful. Women are always found walking around in pencil heels, it would be a good idea to discard these and opt for flats or canvas sandals. Uncomfortable shoes can also cause a number of painful conditions in your feet such as Achilles tendon, corns, calluses, athlete’s foot etc.

Remember that sunscreen – Since the summer season is upon us, it is necessary to bring out those sunscreens, caps and sunglasses to protect our skin and eyes from the harmful UV rays of the sun. Carry an umbrella if need be, to avoid the direct rays of the sun while travelling especially if you going to be on foot during the day.

Stretch those muscles –Stiff muscles mean that the particular muscle is not receiving oxygen and blood properly, this condition usually affects the airborne traveler a lot, and the best way to deal with this is to get up and stretch or walk about for a short while. Even those travelling in a train or a bus for a long period of time have to stretch those stiff muscles, as a failure to do so might result in blood clotting up, which can lead to fatal consequences in the longer run!

Sunburn is condition that occurs to skin that has been overexposed to the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays. Too much time in the sun without protection can result in heightened sensitivity, redness, pain, and even blisters. Here are the ways to treat it:

Cold compress- Keeping a cool compress made of cold water and cold milk is known to be useful in keeping the area cool and soothing the skin. Remember to keep the compress for not more than 20 minutes and change the compress after 2-3 hours.

Gels and Creams- Appling topical steroids containing 1% hydrocortisone creams is helpful in reducing pain and inflammation. Keep away from creams and gels that contain petroleum jelly or chemicals like benzocaine or lidocaine which are known to clog the pores and prevent healing. Also avoid calamine lotion which may dry the skin even further.

Aloe gel- Aloe Vera has anti-bacterial properties that prevent infection and cooling property that helps reduce the inflammation.

If you have an Aloe-vera plant at home, chip off one leaf of the plant and keep it in the refrigerator. After an hour in the fridge, peel the outer layer of the leaf and squeeze out the gel and apply directly on your skin.

Alzheimer’s is a degenerative disease that mostly affects those who are nearing their old age or are in their twilight years. Alzheimer’s is the most common form of dementia and is also known as ‘senile dementia of Alzheimer’s type’.

Alzheimer’s is a cognitive degenerative disease that affects people as they reach their old age. It is named after German Physician Alois Alzheimer, who first discovered it in 1906. Alzheimer’s is a progressive brain disease that affects one’s brain and gradually decreases the ability to think, remember, recognize, recount etc. It usually affects adults above the age of 65 years of age and is caused due to the yet unexplained developments of plaques that build up between nerve cells present in the brain and also due to the tangles which are found to form within dying nerve cells, on the frontal and temporal lobes of the brain, which deal with learning and processing.

We all fall victim to eating junk food at work; virtually no one is immune. So if you want to get off the junk food merry-go-round and improve your health—here are a few suggestions that may be helpful:

Health Biscuits:

If you think just having biscuits will last you for the day, think again. As Shweta Iyengar, a well-known nutritionist puts it, “biscuits should be consumed in moderation, as they do contain fats. Also they can be clubbed with nuts, to make them wholesome and filling”. Health biscuits or nutri biscuits, that contain oats, have a high amount of energy. Besides, there are granola bars (low fat variety cookies) as options that can be carried in your bag. But again, moderation is the key here.

Wheat Khakras:

One of the most easily accessible and quick to eat are the very famous, ‘Wheat Khakras’. These are available in various types, but apart from choosing the flavor that appeals to you, remember to opt for the roasted one other than the fried one if you want to lose those extra kilos. These are available in the market and you can even store them for a long time.

To know more options see Nutrition packed foods for your workdesk

Power Yoga is a powerful fitness based yoga modeled on the Vinyasa and Ashtanga style yoga. Power yoga is based on few aspects of traditional styles of Iyengar and Bikram Yoga. Power yoga has borrowed from different streams of Yoga to form a dynamic combination that is interesting to the new age fitness lovers. It is:

More athletic: Power Yoga is more powerful than usual and aimed to bring in strength and flexibility. It is a dynamic, challenging program that develops body strength and improves mind’s concentration.

Rhythmic movements: Power yoga is done synchronizing the breathing with different poses. Thus the movements have a unity and a grace. Though to a third person, the movements may look like very slow and dance like, the person who is doing it feels the strain on every muscle that is performing the pose and energy that is required to do it.

Strength: Power Yoga is aimed to bring in strength hence the movements are held in one position for more than 5 breaths unlike in other yoga forms.

Not for the beginners: Because it a rigorous form of exercise requiring certain amount of strength and flexibility, Power yoga needs a basic amount of fitness from those who are practicing. Until that level is reached, it will be very difficult to perform power yoga.

Many people dread mornings as they’ve to unwillingly trudge to the workplace. Alarming right? Especially when we spend more than one-third of our day at the workplace or on an average of 40- 50 hours per week, actually the workplace can be great fun. So here is how you can enjoy your work:

Time Management

Time Management is the one age old key when it comes to enjoying your work as it helps one to increase their efficiency and thereby performance. Both these factors can improve the quality of your work and lessen the time required to give an output; stress also becomes almost non-existent when you manage your time well. For better time management learn how to prioritize the tasks at hand and time yourself, say by giving each task a 4 hour deadline.

Avoid procrastination

Procrastination might seem wonderful; especially when it lets you push work far away from you! Often as is the case with procrastination, work piles up and no one enjoys going to work only to be greeted with a mountain of work awaiting them on their desk. The best way to start enjoying your work is to complete your work on the assigned day and leave for the day with a satisfaction of having achieved something rather than going home with a sense of foreboding what work tomorrow will bring.
