This is absolutely false. Fad diets do lead to weight loss, but for a short term. These eating plans often promise to help you lose a lot of weight quickly, or tell you to cut certain foods out of your diet to lose weight, but sudden weight loss leads to health problems in the long term as you are depriving your body of essential nutrients. Hence, fad diets do not help in sustaining weight loss for long.

Weight loss should always be gradual, not sudden. Because in sudden weight loss, you tend to gain double the weight, you wish to lose. Develop a healthier lifestyle and control your weight and this way you will also reduce your chances of developing diseases.

Fats are not all bad by themselves, there is a good side to them as well, and in common parlance these are called, Good Fats. Hence, the key to a healthy you, lies not in totally avoiding fats – which you cannot do – instead in opting for ‘good’ fats, which include, monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats, and actually help the system by lowering the risk of many diseases.

These are three parts which when combined together make up for the whole entity called as – good fats’. These are unsaturated fats, High-density lipoproteins and essential fatty acids.

Unsaturated Fats: These are called good fats because they can improve blood cholesterol levels, ease inflammation, stabilize heart rhythms, and play a number of other beneficial roles.

High-density lipoproteins (HDL): HDL role is to scavenge cholesterol from the bloodstream, from LDL, and from artery walls and ferry it back to the liver for disposal. And you can benefit hugely, if you higher the level of HDL in your body, so as to better your chances of preventing heart disease and other chronic conditions.

Essential fatty acids (EFAs): As the name suggests, this is a branch of good fats, that are essential to the body, and which humans cannot synthesize, and must be obtained through diet.

Cold drinks and ice cream – Most of us prefer drinking cold drinks or licking ice-creams over water, to cool our parched throats during summers. But while the fizzy cold drinks and yummy ice -creams may seem cool, they actually interfere with the body’s very own cooling mechanism!

Coffee and Alcohol – Coffee and alcohol both act as diuretics – substances that increase urination, which leads to a loss of excessive water from the body. Plus with additives like sugar and other such chemicals, both coffee and alcohol increase your body’s temperature from within.

Avoid fried foods – Junk foods such as samosas, vada-pao’s, burgers and pizzas contain a lot of oil as they are deep fried. Oil contains fat, which on entering the body increases the metabolism rate and thereby has a thermal effect on the body, increasing its temperature!

Hypertension or high blood pressure is the disorder when the blood vessels are exposed to high pressure of the blood most of the time. Hypertension by itself doesn’t cause any problem but leads to many complications like heart attack, stroke, heart disease, renal failure etc.

What foods to avoid: Salt is one ingredient that has to be cut down on as it is known to increase blood pressure. Foods to avoid include -packaged food, salted chips, butter, cheese biscuits, papads, pickles and items that are baked.

What foods to include: DASH diet is recommended for those with hypertension which includes more raw and natural foods with minimum packaged foods and sodium. Foods that are good for high blood pressure are celery, garlic, onion, tomato, broccoli, carrot. To add taste to the food without adding salt, use peppers, lime juice, vinegar, basil and coriander.

A messy and disorganized desk is a breeding ground for harmful bacteria and viruses. These unwanted guests may result in you suffering from coughs and colds or other ailments. Would you like to work in an unhealthy workplace? I am sure the answer to the question would be a resounding NO. Here are some ways to do it:

Clean your desk: This doesn’t mean clearing the clutter! Clean your desk with a wet cloth or disinfectant every two days to minimize the horde of bacteria on your desk. This includes your desk floor, keyboard, telephone, telephone mouth piece and files which are common places where bacteria lives.

Don’t eat at your desk: If you are one of those who like to much on something as you work, you may also be inviting pests and germs at your desk. When you eat at your desk you can spill or drop something while eating which later becomes a breeding ground for bacteria. To avoid this, don’t eat at your desk or make it a point to clean your desk every time you eat. Also, when you eat don’t use the same hands to pick up the phone or keyboard, as this might cause the transfer of bacteria to you via your own hands! Keeping tissues handy in drawers can help you clean the desk whenever needed.

Come summer and our bodies begin losing water at a much faster rate due to excessive sweating and evaporation of water from the lungs as the body temperature rises. But along with water, our body also loses electrolytes. Electrolytes are needed by our body for the proper functioning of our cells and organs, a low level of electrolytes can cause dehydration, spells of fainting, blind spots etc to occur for a short period of time.

To ensure that your body is healthy and well stocked with electrolytes while travelling, drink coconut water or dissolve Electral in a glass of water and drink it for oral rehydration. Remember to always carry an extra packet of Electral with you while travelling, to deal with the off-chance of you falling prey to motion sickness or an upset tummy!

When sunburn is severe it could be accompanied by dizziness, nausea, blisters, peeling of the skin and sensitivity to light. Here is how to deal with it:

Cool showers- The first thing you need to do to heal the sun burnt area is to get ready for a bath. The cool water will calm the inflammation and heal the burns. When you are taking a bath remember to keep away from the unnecessary chemicals like scented soaps, shower gels that may irritate your skin at the moment.

Another home remedy to cool your self is by getting a healing bath. To get it ready, add 2 cups of baking oil in tepid or lukewarm water and add 10 drops of lavender oil to it for 10 minutes till it dissolves. Soak your body in this water for 20 minutes. Baking soda in the water draws out the heat from your skin and lavender oil is useful in reducing inflammation of the skin.

Dry gently- After you take a cool shower remember to be gentle when you dry your skin. Do not rub but pat dry with a soft towel to avoid more irritation to the skin.

Don’t peel- A serious sun burnt skin will start peeling off due to the damage caused. Peeling skin is not only an unattractive sight but it can causes infection too. So remember however strong the urge to peel the skin, let it be, of the some part of the skin appears to hang loosely, you need to carefully cut it out with a scissors. Apply an antibacterial ointment after you cut off the dead skin.

You’re working on a big project at your desk when you’re suddenly overcome by hunger. Should you head for the break room and indulge in the box of donuts that was brought in earlier in the day? But here are some quick and easy healthy snacks for the office that you can make at home:

Dry fruits and Nuts:

When you want to simply sit at your desk and have something nutritious, without having to get up from your seat, nuts come to the rescue. These include figs, raisins, cashews, dried apricots. Nuts contain fatty acids which are what your body needs. Recent studies show that nuts do not contain high calories; in fact their fat is mainly in the form of the healthier monounsaturates. If you consume small amounts of nuts while you are working on that important project, glued to the desktop, you would be at a lower risk of heart disease and would get much of omega-3 fatty acids, protein, folic acid, B2, B6, and other essential minerals.

Fruits:

The best thing you can do to your body while working in office is to have fruits in between times. An apple, pear or orange goes a long way in boosting metabolism and increasing productivity. To go a step further, a fruit chaat or mixed fruit salad, in your tiffin will do wonders to your health if you consume it after lunch in between hours when hunger pangs get onto you. However, make sure, you do not add bananas if you making a food salad, as from morning until noon, they would darken in colour. While eating one piece of fruit may be satisfying, eating several different kinds of fruits is more pleasing to the palate.
